Cory Arcangel ‘beat the champ’

a chronology of bowling video games that have been hacked to repeatedly score gutter shots. Screens line the bending wall of the curve in Barbican, similar to a bowling ball, you slide along 14 screens till you reach all the consoles. Theres something enigmatic in the repeated failure of gutter balls, for me its an iconic teen tendency of goofing up impressing your friends.

What i also really like about it is the various attempts ro recreate the misery felt when one misses all the pins at the bowling alley. the characters in the video game repeatedly express exasperation and frustration, trapped in this failure loop.

The visual nostalgia is accompanied by 8bit soundscapes for the now dated videogames. the whole peice is very endearing and goofy as it repeatedly fails.
