On Tuesday 21st September i set up and led a screening and discussion with some members of the reading group at the Furzedown project (an elderly recreation centre in wandsworth). This was part of my work with Film & Video Umbrella as a cultural Ambassador intern for this years ‘Free to Air’
Free to Air’ is a series of exhibitions and events that will extend across London over a four-year period. Taking as its starting point Roosevelt’s famous ‘four freedoms’ – freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want and freedom from fear – it sets out to explore some of the multiple meanings of ‘freedom’ in contemporary society.
I curated an individual one-off event for the reading group that showcased previous work of this years commissoned artist Ergin Cavasoglu followed by an open discussion on ‘Freedom from Want’.
The Screening was relaxed and informal and everyone found it pleasant to be viewing new video art in their community centre. I started working on the outreach and engagement in June, and the exstensive research helped me in customising the right sort of event. I will upload some pictures and write some more about it once we get internet.
